A few weeks ago, they requested me to write an article about one of the paintings by Hopper as well as one of the Nighthawks, and I, as a good researcher, went to find out. Since it is generally known or at the very least, learn by experience, that to understand a painting, one needs to know its history, the author and, most importantly, the context within which he painted it. Art is certainly something universal, transcendent to time and space, and therefore readable in the midst of centuries. The meanings alter, as does the way society and the world evolve and what was once able to be clearly seen, perhaps decades after, is not so obvious. What was unthinkable before now could be revealing the work to us in a different manner.Re-meaning a work through timeThis is a bit like the scene I see when you view Hopper's " Nighthawks" that was shut at the bar late in the evening, and in the window wich looks like an aquarium, from the same position as the characters he who were observed.I believe that , in this painting, Hopper wanted to give space for the viewer to allow him to observe the silent, detailed and calm scene that we are presented by the dark night. This particular space, created for an active audience, is perhaps the keystone that allows the work to be reinterpreted over time and consequently to remain timeless, eternal contemporary, and contemporary. The work, created in 1942, is not immediately linked to a specific date however it appears that its dating is changeable according to the changes in the viewer, according to the exact time at which the work is observed. My opinion is that this is what is essential to reading, the space that is occupied by the observer that Hopper wanted to create.I'll explain. While researching information and news on Hopper's " Nighthawks", I was able to observe how many describe it by highlighting these elements:<img width="499" src="http://www.artslife.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Hopper.jpg">"[...] the solitude, the feeling of emptiness of a world whose shimmering patina starts to lose its luster. [...] The distinctively commercial essence lies, the myths rip off their masks and show the world as a blurred reality, with no reliable sources of reference Isolated by doubt and a lack of morality. "The night and the transformationI believe this interpretation is partial, that is, it's an interpretation influenced in the context of society and by the date that is attributed to the work: it was the United States between the 40s and 50s during the economic boom which redefined the social and cultural values in the life of people in a society that was even a little bourgeois, where night bars are seen as places of solitude, despair and existential emptiness. This is somewhat true and it's not the whole truth. When I first came across this painting, without having studied, it gave me lots of joy and peace, with its bright contrast and its nocturnal stillness.Maybe, coming from the midst of a huge, noisy and bustling city, nighttime is one of the moments when I can experience the city with more peace with fewer people in the area and fewer vehicles as well as less noise. There are also more space between the streets to choose, and which place to rest under the night sky that is starless. The night has a very different meaning for me than those who frequented bars in the United States during the 40s: when the sun goes down, the city transforms its appearance, and the streets are more open and simple. We cannot ignore how society has transformed itself over the course of more than half a century of social and cultural shifts, between Pop and Rock culture, between psychoedelic movement and the 2000s.Personally, as a child in the 90s, I grew up also at night and by "growing up" I am referring to all the "formative" experiences that the night provided me with. It is for me common to be out in the evening usually walking through the streets, and on Saturdays looking for the best party, dancing until dawn and riding around on a motorbike or car to locate the last open bar where to get the croissant or hot pizza or hot pizza, and then where to sip the last glass and light the last puff before dawn arrived. Maybe from the 80s to the present, nightlife stopped frightening those who stayed at the house (let's take a look at the jazz movement, anti-prohibitionism and even the Cursed Poets who were all great nights owls) and it has become the place where the majority of people of society find the comfort and peace of other nighthawks.Hopper's modern realist styleThe painting of Hopper today reminds me of a variety of scenes from modern life. It makes me almost satisfied and sympathetic, with the last three characters, who have an exchange of words while the bartender clears the bar in order to conclude a day and open another. People who are nocturnal seek peace in the quiet of their nightly companions. They reflect on their lives by watching them through a glass . https://openartimages.com/search/edward-hopper gather as a tribe of the night, welcoming everyone and judging no one. It's no accident that in the most ancient primitive civilizations like the Indian one that the hour and a half before dawn is called Brahmamuhurta or the time of Brahma the most ideal moment to commit yourself to prayer, meditation studying, and contemplation. In this time, the energies are more acute and intense, but they are of a calm, spiritual intensity. There is no solitude nor empty space in Hopper's painting. I found more among the gentrified streets of the night quarters, as even the right-thinking citizens began drinking in the evening. So that, even the most popular and historic areas had to be turned into showcases for the consumer as well as the spontaneous aggregations of people in the square had to rearrange themselves into lines waiting to get their turn; and the music of the drums that played on the the street was slowed by the police sirens. It is a worry for me now, that the night is shattered by its sacred timeless atmosphere as an opportunity for aggregation of individuals, and by becoming another uncover productive gear of the system, requiring clarity and respectability even in the most secluded corners of the city.
