A few weeks ago, they requested for me to compose an essay on one of the paintings by Hopper as well as one of the Nighthawks and I, being an excellent researcher, went to learn more. Because it is known or at the very least, learn by experience, that to understand a painting, one must know its history, the author and above all the setting in the which it was painted. Art is certainly an universal thing, that transcends both space and time making it accessible even in the midst of centuries. However, the interpretations alter, as does the way the world and society change, and what previously could be clearly seen, perhaps decades after, is not evident. What was never considered prior to now could be revealing the work to us in a totally different manner.Re-meaning a work through timeThis is a bit like the scene I see when you view the work of Hopper's " Nighthawks" that was shut at the bar, late at night, in that window, which resembles the inside of a fish tank, in the location of the characters that are who were observed.I believe that in this painting, Hopper wanted to give space for the viewer to allow him to look at the silent, detailed and calm scene given to us by the dark night. This particular space, created for an active audience, is perhaps the keystone that allows the work to change throughout time and, consequently, to remain timeless, eternal and even modern. The work, created in 1942, isn't immediately attributable to an exact historical moment however it appears that the date of its creation can change depending on the changing viewer, depending on the exact time at which the work is observed. My opinion is that this is what is essential to reading, the space dedicated to the reader Hopper was hoping to create.I'll explain. While researching information and news on Hopper's " Nighthawks" I was able to see how people describe the film by highlighting these aspects:"[...] the feeling of being empty in a world whose shimmering patina begins to give way [...] The uniquely commercial character, the false myths take off their masks and show the world as a blurred reality, with no reliable sources of reference , immobilized by uncertainty and a lack of morality. "Night and transformationI think this interpretation is not complete and, therefore, it's an interpretation influenced in the context of society and by the dates attributed to the work that took place in The United States between the 40s and 50s, in the boom in economics which redefined the social and cultural values in the life of people, a society that is even a little bourgeois, where night bars are seen as places of loneliness or despair. It's true in a certain degree, and it's not the whole truth.<img width="498" src="http://idata.over-blog.com/3/14/98/68/Tableaux-du-samedi/Edward-Hopper-ground-swell-1939.jpeg">The first time I came across this painting, without having studied it, it brought me a lot of happiness and peace with its vibrant contrast and nocturnal stillness. If I'm from a large busy and noisy city, nighttime is one of the moments that I am able to enjoy the city more calmly there are fewer people more cars and less noise, more spaces between the streets to make the most of, and which place to rest under the night sky that is starless. The night has a very different meaning to me than the people who drank in bars across the United States during the 40s as the sun's path down the city changes its face, streets become more open and simple. We must not forget how society has evolved through more than a half century of social and cultural changes. This is the case between Pop and Rock culture, and between the popular psychedelic scene and the 2000s.Personally, as a child of the 90s, I was also a night-time kid and by that I am referring to everything "formative" experiences that the night gave me. For https://openartimages.com/search/edward-hopper is always normal to go out at night usually walking through the neighborhood on weekends, searching for the perfect party, dancing until dawn while riding a motorbike, or driving around in search of the last bar that is open to get the croissant or hot pizza and where you can drink the last glass of wine and light the last cigarette before dawn came. Maybe from the 80s to the present, nightlife stopped frightening those who stayed at their homes (let's take a look at the jazz movement, anti-prohibitionism and the cursed Poets all of them perfect night owls) and it has become the place where many of the prominent personalities of the world find tranquility and security of the other nighthawks.Hopper's modern realist styleNowadays Hopper's painting reminds me of numerous scenes from contemporary life, and makes me feel proud and in any case sympathize with the final three characters, who have an exchange of words while the bartender cleans the bar to close the day and then open another. Those nocturnes seek rest in the solitude of their nocturnal companions, meditate on their lives observing their surroundings through a glass, and meet as a tribe in the night, accepting everyone and judging no one. It's not a coincidence that in the most ancient primitive civilizations like the Indian one that the time between midnight and sunrise is known as Brahmamuhurta which is also known as the time of Brahma the most ideal time to devote yourself to prayer, meditation, study and introspection. In this space of time the energy is more intense, intense but of tranquil, spiritual intensity. There is no solitude nor absence in the painting of Hopper. I found more among the streets that were gentrified in the night quarters. This is because even the right-thinking folks started going out in the evening. In other words, the oldest and most popular areas were transformed into marketplaces for consumers as the spontaneous gatherings of people in the square had to rearrange themselves in line waiting to be seated; and the music of the drums that played on the the street was slowed by police sirens. That scares me today that nighttime is degraded by its sacred , timeless atmosphere and by the fact that it is a moment of aggregation for the lone wolves, and is now an additional uncovering tool of the system, demanding clarity and respectability even in the darkest parts within the cities.
