A few weeks ago, they requested for me to compose an essay about the work of Hopper and one of the Nighthawks, and I, as an experienced researcher, was able to learn more. Because it is known, or at least is taught by experience, in order to appreciate a painting one needs to know its history and the painter, and above all the context within the which it was painted. It is surely something universal, transcendent to time and space, and therefore readable in the midst of centuries. The interpretations, however, change, along with how society and the world change and what was once able to be easily seen, maybe decades after, is not so obvious. What was not considered before is now revealing the process to us in a different manner.Re-defining a work over timeThis is similar to what I imagine happens when you see Hopper's " Nighthawks", closed at the bar, late at evening, and in the window that resembles a fish tank, in the same position as the characters he observed.I believe that in this painting, Hopper wanted to give space to the viewer, allowing him to look at the silent, detailed and calm scene presented to us by the dark night. This space, conceived for an active viewer may be the most important element that allows the artwork to be changed throughout time and, consequently, to remain timeless, eternal and even modern. The painting, made in 1942, is not immediately attributable to a precise date, but it seems that the date of its creation can change with the change of the viewer, depending on the time in which the work is observed. My opinion is that this is the most important aspect of reading, the space dedicated by the observer that Hopper wanted to create. https://openartimages.com/search/edward-hopper 'll explain.<img width="406" src="https://staticfanpage.akamaized.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/456006081.jpg">In my research for information and news about Hopper's " Nighthawks" I was able be aware of how many people have described it , highlighting the following elements:"[...] the feeling of emptiness of a world whose shimmering patina begins to give way [...] The uniquely commercial character, the false myths take off their masks to reveal the world as a blurred reality, with no valid points of reference Isolated by doubt and unconscience. "Night and transformationI think this interpretation is not complete which means that it's an interpretation influenced from the socio-cultural context and by the dates attributed to the work that took place in it was the United States between the 40s and 50s, during the economic boom which redefined the cultural and social assets that were a part of the lives of the people who lived in a society which is even a little bourgeois, in which nightclubs are seen as places of solitude or despair. This is somewhat true and it's not the whole truth.First time that I saw this painting, and without having studied, it gave me joy and peace, with its bright contrast and nocturnal stillness.Perhaps, as a resident of an extremely noisy and crowded city, nighttime is one of the moments where I can enjoy the city in a more peaceful way there are fewer people more cars as well as less noise. There are also more space between the streets to appropriate, the best place to be, beneath the city's starless sky. The night is a different meaning for me from those who went to bars in The United States during the 40s as the sun's path down the city changes its appearance and streets become more open and easy.It is impossible to ignore the way society has transformed itself through more than a half century of social and cultural changes, that occurred between Pop as well as Rock culture, between the psychoedelic movement in the 1990s and 2000s.Personally, as a child of the 90s, grew up also at night, and by growing up I am referring to everything "formative" experiences that the night provided me with. It is for me normal to go out at night and walk around the neighborhood, and on Saturdays , looking for the best party, dancing until dawn while riding a motorbike, or car to locate the last bar open to grab the hot pizza or croissant or hot pizza, and then where to sip the last glass of wine and light the last cigarette before dawn was set. From the 80s and afterward, the night no longer from frightening those who stayed home (let's keep in mind the anti-prohibitionism movement, jazz music and even the Cursed Poets all of them perfect evening owls) and it has become the place where the majority of people of society find the tranquility and security of the other nighthawks.Hopper's modern realist styleNowadays Hopper's painting reminds me of numerous scenes from contemporary life, and make me feel satisfied and sympathetic, with the last three characters, who have with the bartender as he is cleaning the bar to end the day and then open another. The nocturnes want to rest in the solitude of their nocturnal companions, meditate on their lives observing them through a glass . They form a group of the night, welcoming everyone , and never judging anyone. It's no accident that in the most ancient civilisations, such as the Indian one the time between midnight and dawn is called Brahmamuhurta, or time of Brahma which is the ideal moment to commit oneself to meditation, prayer as well as study and reflection. In this time, the energies are more acute as well as intense but with tranquil, spiritual intensity. There is no solitude nor empty space in Hopper's painting. I saw more of it in the streets that were gentrified in the night quarters. This is because even the right-thinking folks started going out in the evening. In other words, the most popular and historic areas had to be turned into showcases for the consumer as the spontaneous gatherings of people in the square had to arrange themselves into lines waiting to be seated to be seated; and the beat of the drums that played on the other side of the street was silenced by the police sirens. That scares me today because the night is desnatured by its sacred timeless atmosphere, by its being an occasion of aggregation for individuals, and by becoming an unintentional and productive element of the system, requiring transparency and respectability from the darkest corners in the city.
