few weeks ago they asked I write an article on the work of Hopper as well as one of the Nighthawks and I, being an excellent researcher, went to learn more. Since it is generally known or at the least learn by experience, that to comprehend a painting one must know its history, the author and most importantly the setting in the which it was painted. Art is certainly an universal thing, that transcends time and space, making it is recognizable after hundreds of years. The meanings are subject to change as society and the world change and what used to be seen clearly, possibly years later, is no longer as obvious. What was not considered before now could be revealing the process to us in a different manner.Re-defining a piece of work in the course of timeThis is a bit like the scene I see when you look at Hopper's " Nighthawks", closed at the bar late in the evening, and in the window wich looks like the inside of a fish tank, in the same position as the characters he that are observed. http://cqms.skku.edu/b/lecture/238589 believe that , in the painting Hopper was trying to open up space for the viewer to allow him to observe the silent tranquil, precise and serene scene given to us by the darkness. This particular space, created for an active viewer could be the keystone, which allows the painting to change in the course of time, and to remain timeless, indestructible and even contemporary. The piece, which was created in 1942, is not immediately linked to a specific historical moment, but it seems that its dating is changeable depending on the changing viewer, depending on the exact time at which the piece is seen.I believe this is the key to reading, the space dedicated to the reader Hopper wanted to create.I'll explain. While researching information and news on Hopper's " Nighthawks" I was able see how people describe the film by highlighting these aspects:"[...] the feeling of emptyness of a world whose shimmering patina begins to give way [...] The distinctly commercial element, the false myths take off their masks to reveal a displaced reality, without any valid reference points in the face of uncertainty and unconscience. "The night and the transformationI think this interpretation is a little ambiguous which means that it's a interpretation provided in the context of society as well as by the dates attributed to the work that took place in it was the United States between the 40s and 50s, during the boom in economics that was redefining the cultural and social assets that were a part of the life of people, a society that is even a bit bourgeois, where night bars are seen as places of solitude and despair, as well as a sense of emptiness. This is somewhat true and slightly not.First time that I came across this painting, and without having studied it, it gave me peace and joy, thanks to its bright contrast and its nocturnal stillness.Perhaps, as a resident of the midst of a huge, noisy and bustling city, night is one of the moments when I can experience the city in a more peaceful way there are fewer people and fewer vehicles and less noise, more open spaces to choose, and which place to rest under the starless urban sky. Night has a completely different meaning for me than the people who drank in bars across the United States during the 40s: when the sun goes down the city changes its face, streets become more open and simple. We must not forget how society has evolved over the course of more than half a century of cultural and social changes. This is the case between Pop and Rock culture, between the popular psychedelic scene as well as the decade 2000.Personally, as a child of the 90s, I was also a night-time kid and by "growing up" I am referring to everything "formative" experiences that the night gave me. It is for me normal to go out after dark, often walking through the neighborhood on weekends, searching for the best nightclub, dancing till dawn while riding a motorbike, or car to locate the last open bar where to grab the croissant or hot pizza, where to drink the last glass and light the last puff before dawn came. Maybe from the 80s onwards, the night stopped in a way that scared those who stayed their homes (let's not forget the anti-prohibitionism movement and jazz movement and the cursed Poets all of them perfect evening owls) and it became the place where the majority of people of the world find peace and comfort of other night hawks.Hopper's contemporary realism<img width="384" src="https://www.connaissancedesarts.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/cda2020_edward_hopper_5_chef_d_oeuvre_5.jpg">The painting of Hopper today reminds me of a variety of scenes from modern life. It makes me almost satisfied and sympathize with the final three characters who engage in a chat while the bartender cleans the bar to close a day and open another. The nocturnes want to rest in the silence of the nocturnal company, contemplate their lives, watching their surroundings through a glass, and meet as a tribe in the night, welcoming everyone , and never judging anyone. It's not a coincidence that in the oldest civilisations, such as the Indian one the hour and a half before dawn is called Brahmamuhurta or the time of Brahma which is the ideal time to dedicate yourself to prayer, meditation, study and introspection. In this time, the energies are more acute, intense but of an ethereal, spiritual focus. There is no solitude nor empty space in Hopper's painting. I found more among the streets that were gentrified in the night quarters, as even the right-thinking citizens began going out in the evening. In other words, the most popular and historic areas were transformed into showcases for the consumer as the spontaneous gatherings of people who gathered in the square were required to arrange themselves in line, waiting for their turn; and the music of the drums along the the street was drowned out by police sirens. That scares me today because the night is desnatured by its sacred , timeless atmosphere as a moment of aggregation for lone wolves, and becoming an unintentional and productive element of the system, demanding the highest level of professionalism and clarity even from the darkest corners in the city.
