With laboratory test and field experiment, this paper studied the water conservation performance of four types of super absorbent polymer (SAP) in deionized water and loam soil, and the effects of the type and dosage of SAP on the soil water storage and maize yield. In order to study the effects of super absorbent polymer and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on yield and yield components of maize (double cross 370), the experiment was done in Karaj region/ Iran in 2009. The results showed that the water conservation performance of SAP was highly related to its type and particle size. Excess or scarcity would restrain the water conservation of SAP. The effects of discharge power, plasma treatment time, initiator dosage, acrylic acid dosage, vacuum degree and neutralization ratio on water absorbency and grafting reaction time of the products were studied by single factor experiments. 40%, in which the distilled water absorbency of the product reached its maximum of 509 g/g and the grafting reaction time approached its minimum of 2min. This process has the advantages of simple operation, easy control, high grafting efficiency, short production cycle, low cost and so on, which meet the industrial production requirements of super absorbent polymer. The greatest proline accumulation (4.001 mg/g dry weight) belonged to irrigation after 200 mm evaporation with 120 kg/ha of polymer, and the minimum leaf proline content (0.748 mg/g dry weight) was observed at irrigation after 100 mm evaporation with 300 kg/ha of polymer. Results of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) showed the significant effect of irrigation on dried flower, the numbers of capitol per plant, capitol diameter and receptacle height, and non significant effect on single capitol weight and leaf soluble carbohydrates.</p><p> But, the maximum and minimum numbers of capitol per plant (199.22 and 91.22) were obtained from 100 and 150 mm evaporation from pan, respectively. In this research, chlorophyll a and b had the reducing trend from irrigation after 100 mm evaporation from pan. Global survey shows the 21st century has witnessed a slow and steady decline of irrigation water potential conjugated with the rising population & improved economic activities among countries specially located in arid and semi-arid parts of the world. SAP demand will be mainly driven by the demand from disposable baby diapers from emerging nations, like China and India, as they are expected to witness a steady growth rate of about 15-20 percent in the future.
