A few weeks ago, they requested me to write an article on a painting by Hopper, one of the Nighthawks and I, as an experienced researcher, was able to learn more. It is well-known or at the very least, taught by experience, in order to appreciate a painting one must know its history and the painter, and, most importantly, the context within which he painted it. It is surely something universal, transcendent to time and space, which makes it readable after hundreds of years. However, the interpretations alter, as does the way society and the world change, and what previously could be seen clearly, possibly decades later, is no longer so obvious. What was unthinkable before, today could reveal the process to us in a completely different way.Re-meaning a work through timeIt's a little like what I imagine happens when you view Hopper's " Nighthawks" that was shut at the bar at evening, and in the window wich looks like a fish tank, in the same position as the characters he that are observed.I think that in this work, Hopper was trying to open up space to the viewer, allowing him to look at the silent serene, well-detailed and peaceful scene presented to us by the dark night. This particular space, created for an active audience may be the most important element that allows the work to change over time and consequently to remain timeless, eternal and even modern. The piece, which was created in 1942, cannot be immediately attributable to an exact historical moment, but it seems that its dating is changeable according to the changes in the viewer, according to the exact time at which the piece is seen.I believe this is the key to reading, the space that is occupied by the observer that Hopper desired to create.I'll explain. While researching information and news on Hopper's " Nighthawks" I was able be aware of how many people have described it , highlighting the following elements:"[...] the feeling of emptiness of the world that's shimmering patina is beginning to fade. [...] The distinctively commercial character, the false myths take off their masks to reveal an unrealized reality, devoid of valid points of reference in the face of uncertainty and unconscience. "<img width="324" src="http://www.milanoplatinum.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Edward-Hopper-High-Noon-1949-Wikiart.jpg">The night and the transformationI believe this interpretation is partial and, therefore, it is an interpretation given by the social context as well as by the dating attributed to the work of the United States between the 40s and 50s during the economic boom that redefined cultural and social assets that were a part of the life of people, a society that is even a bit bourgeois in which nightclubs are seen as places of solitude and despair, as well as a sense of emptiness. It's a little true, but it's not the whole truth. When I first came across the painting without having studied it, it brought me joy and peace, with its bright contrast and quiet nocturnal quality.Maybe, coming from an extremely noisy and crowded city, nighttime is one of the times that I am able to enjoy the city more calmly there are fewer people, fewer cars as well as less noise. There are also more open spaces to make the most of, and where to stay , under the night sky that is starless. Night has a completely different meaning to me than the people who drank in bars across The United States during the 40s as the sun's path down the city changes its appearance and the streets become more free and simple. It is impossible to ignore the way society has evolved in more than half a century of cultural and social changes. This is the case that occurred between Pop as well as Rock culture, and between the psychoedelic movement and the 2000s.Personally, as a daughter in the 90s, I have also grown up at night and by that I'm referring to everything "formative" experiences that the night gave me. It is for me common to be out in the evening, often walking through the streets, and on Saturdays , looking for the best party, dancing until the early hours while riding a motorbike, or car to locate the last bar that is open you can grab a croissant or hot pizza or hot pizza, and then where to sip the last glass and light the last puff before dawn was set. Perhaps from https://canvas.instructure.com/eportfolios/682421/Home/The_Truth_About_Hoppers_Nighthawks_In_7_Little_Words to the present, nightlife stopped frightening those who stayed at the house (let's take a look at the jazz movement, anti-prohibitionism and even the Cursed Poets all of them perfect evening owls) and it has become the place where many of the prominent personalities of society find the tranquility and security of the other nightclubs.Hopper's contemporary realist styleThe painting of Hopper today reminds me of a variety of scenes from modern life. It makes me feel happy and, in all likelihood, sympathetic, with the final three characters, who exchange a chat while the bartender cleans the bar to close the day and then open another. Those nocturnes seek rest in the quiet of their nightly companions. They contemplate their lives, watching their surroundings through a glass, and meet as a tribe in the night, welcoming everyone and judging no one. It's not a coincidence that in the most ancient civilisations, such as the Indian one that the half hour before dawn is known as Brahmamuhurta which is also known as the time of Brahma, the best moment to commit oneself to meditation, prayer studying, and contemplation. This is the time of day when the energies are more acute and intense, but they are of tranquil, spiritual intensity.I see no solitude or emptiness in Hopper's painting; I saw more of it in the gentrified streets of the night quarters, as even the right-thinking people started drinking in the evening. So that, even the most famous and oldest areas had to be turned into showcases for the consumer as well as the spontaneous aggregations of people in the square had to rearrange themselves in line waiting to get their turn while the sound of the drums on the side of the street was slowed by police sirens. It is a worry for me now, that the night is desnatured by its sacred , timeless atmosphere and by the fact that it is a moment of aggregation for lone wolves, and becoming another uncover productive gear of the system, demanding the highest level of professionalism and clarity even in the most secluded corners within the cities.
